7 Steps to Choosing the Perfect Air Purifier

Have you thought about buying an air purifier before, but have been overwhelmed by the thought of making a responsible choice? The process of choosing an air purifier can be daunting if you don’t know much about what you’re looking for. You may find yourself wondering what level of filtration you need and what contaminants you should be most worried about.
To get started, here are seven tips that can serve as a guide for choosing the right air purifier for you and your home.
1. Make a List of Air Contaminants
The most important step in choosing an air purifier is to make a list of what exactly you need or want to be removed from your home’s air. For most people, that list will include common indoor air pollutants such as dust, smoke, pet dander and pollen. Most air filters are able to remove those contaminants, but may not be able to remove other potential pollutants such as specific allergens, odors, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), mold and germs.
The American Lung Association says that other common sources of poor indoor air quality include asbestos, off-gassing from carpets and other textiles, cleaning supplies and household chemicals, formaldehyde, lead and radon.
2. Make Sure the Size Fits
It’s crucial that you choose an air purifier solution that is a good fit for the amount of coverage you require. If you need an air purifier to cover your entire home, then your needs will be much different from those of a homeowner who only wants to filter the air in one or two rooms.
While it is possible to use an air purifier that’s technically too big for your needs, your real concern should be making sure it meets your minimum strength requirements. Accordingly, you should always use an air purifier with a coverage area that’s no smaller than the size of the room (or rooms) that you need it for.
3. Check the Warranty
4. Check the Noise Level
5. Determine Whether You Need Odor Removal
In many cases, air purifiers that can remove a given pollutant will also tend to remove the odor caused by that pollutant. However, that’s not always a guarantee. The most effective odor removal technique is simple and straightforward: Simply choose an air purifier that includes activated carbon pre-filters.
Activated carbon contains microscopic carbon particles. These particles have an enormous surface-area-to-mass ratio, which makes them so absorbent that they literally suck odor molecules out of the air like a sponge. Activated carbon filtration is a great fit if you’re worried about cooking odors, pet odors and other household smells.
6. Size the Product
7. Check for Portability
Unless you plan on keeping your chosen air purifier in the same room throughout the year, portability is an important factor to keep in mind. The best solution in this regard is to find a unit that comes with a handle for easy carrying. Make sure the purifier is light enough for you to pick up easily, especially if you struggle to carry things normally or have lifting-weight restrictions for health reasons.
Even if you don’t necessarily plan on moving the air purifier between rooms, a handle is still a good choice if you’re buying a filter intended for only one or two rooms. That way, you’ll always have the option for easy relocation if necessary.
Portable single and dual-room air purifiers are an especially good fit if your home usage patterns change throughout the year. For example, if you tend to spend the hot summer months in your cooler finished basement and relocate upstairs once winter sets in, you need to be able to easily move your air purifier to the rooms where you spend most of your time.
