When you are on city water, the water coming into your home can bring with it a whole host of problems, many of them go undetected although you may notice:

  • Water that tastes or smells funny
  • Discoloration on water appliances
  • Visible sediment in the water
  • Spots appearing on tubs and showers, dishes, and fixtures

Municipalities will use chlorine, chloramine, or a combination of both to ensure the water is free from bacteria. However, these chemicals and their by-products can be harmful to your health and enter your body through skin absorption and vapor inhalation. Drinking bottled water or filtering just your sink is not enough!

According to the American Journal of Public Health,
“up to 2/3 of the harmful effects of chlorine is due to inhalation and skin absorption while showering”

“One common factor among women with breast cancer is that they all have 50-60% higher levels of these chlorination by-products (THMs) in their fat tissue than women without breast cancer…”

When well water is the water source for your home, there are a number of problems that can arise. More than just being unsightly or distasteful, well water can cause serious problems for your home and health if left untreated.

Some indicators of well water problems are:

  • Sulfur smell (often referred to as the “rotten egg” smell)
  • Orange or brown coloration to the water
  • Visible sediment in the water
  • Staining on dishes, fixtures, clothing, and water appliances

The problems indicated by these common issues can include:

  • Elevated levels of iron and sediment in your water supply
  • Hydrogen sulfide permeating the entire plumbing system
  • Potentially harmful chemicals (such as pesticides) contaminating the well

These problems are potentially dangerous, not only for your home and appliances, but also for your health.

Water is described as “hard” when it has a high mineral count. High levels of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and other contaminants may damage your home’s plumbing system, water appliances and rob them of their energy efficiency. Hard water can irritate skin and hair, even causing or worsening the symptoms of eczema.

Some indicators of hard water problems are:

  • Reduced water flow and water pressure
  • Spotting on dishes or fixtures
  • Dry hair or skin
  • White mineral buildup on faucets and showerheads

If left untreated, hard water in your home will cause home issues such as:

  • Buildup and corrosion inside pipes and appliances
  • Shortened lifespan of water-using appliances (hot water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators)
  • Decreased effectiveness of laundry and dish soaps and detergents
  • Reduced capacity of the heat exchangers to heat water resulting in higher energy costs
